Overview:

The Agricultural Element of the San Benito County General Plan is a key initiative aimed at protecting and sustaining the county’s valuable agricultural lands. This element is being developed as part of the Sustainable Agricultural Lands Conservation (SALC) program, which provides funding to help prevent the conversion of agricultural lands to non-agricultural uses. The goal is to create policies that ensure long-term agricultural productivity, preserve open spaces, and support the local economy.

Key Components of the Agricultural Element:

  • Land Conservation: Identifying and protecting high-priority agricultural lands to prevent their conversion to other uses.
  • Sustainable Practices: Encouraging farming practices that maintain soil health, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and promote long-term agricultural viability.
  • Community Involvement: Engaging local stakeholders, including farmers, residents, and experts, to develop policies that reflect the needs and values of the community.
  • Integration with the General Plan: Aligning the Agricultural Element with other components of the General Plan to ensure a cohesive approach to land use and development.

The Agricultural Element will serve as a guiding document for preserving San Benito County’s agricultural heritage while supporting sustainable growth and development. Through this effort, the county aims to balance economic growth with the preservation of its rich agricultural landscape.
